When darkness falls, the northern lights can appear at any time. From the cabins you look straight at the sea and the mountains — you needn't go further than the terrace, or simply lean back on the sofa by the fire and wait for the sky to wake.
Winter is also peak season for skrei cod and cod roe. Buy the catch straight from the local fish landing station and cook it yourself in the well-equipped cabin kitchen, or let one of the nearby restaurants do the work for you after a day outdoors.

The power of the Arctic weather
Winter weather can be intense, bringing shifting conditions with heavy snow, rain, and fierce coastal winds that can drive the precipitation completely horizontally. Our high-end cabins are built to withstand the elements, featuring floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows that keep you warm while giving you a front-row seat to nature's theater. For a truly unique Arctic experience, guests staying in Nature & Sea can heat up the private sauna, soak in the deep warmth, and then step straight out into the crisp snow or the horizontally driven rain before retreating back into the absolute silence of the cabin.
Winter roads & the scenic ascent
Snowstorms and icy patches are a natural part of the season. Because our cabins are perched at the very top of the hill to secure the absolute best, most uninterrupted panoramic views, the access road can occasionally be challenging to drive up. Your safety and comfort are paramount: we have established a dedicated parking area right at the entrance of the property. If you ever feel uncomfortable navigating the final hill in winter conditions, you can safely leave your car there — the walk up is short, and we always advise packing sturdy winter boots with good grip.
Misconceptions about the cold
Many international travellers expect freezing, sub-zero Arctic temperatures during a Norwegian winter. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Sørvågen enjoys a surprisingly mild coastal climate — deep, extreme freezing temperatures are very rare here. The winter air is crisp and refreshing rather than bitterly cold, meaning that as long as you wear windproof layers and good boots, exploring the winter landscape is comfortable and highly enjoyable.
Polar twilight and little daylight
Midwinter has only a few usable hours of daylight. Plan hikes early in the day and always bring a headlamp.
Reinebringen is closed
The sherpa stairs close in winter for safety. Choose lower, safe hikes instead — we're happy to advise.
Be flexible with travel
Ferries and flights can be cancelled in bad weather. Travel with some margin, especially to and from day trips.
